چکیده

Fully autonomous, room temperature self-healing in PMMA is achieved for the first time through the use of microcapsules containing a solvent. Linear PMMA is embedded with microcapsules (ca. 300 mm) containing a liquid anisole solvent core and a small amount of linear PMMA polymer for healing of crack damage. Specimens containing a range of concentrations of microcapsules were fracture tested and then allowed to heal for 1e7 days at ambient conditions. The healing efficiency of the material is evaluated based on the recovery of fracture toughness and is shown to be dependent on both healing time and microcapsule concentration. A maximum healing efficiency of 89% is obtained for specimens containing 5 wt% solvent microcapsules after 3 days of healing. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Full recovery of fiber/matrix interfacial bond strength using a microencapsulated solvent-based healing system

Full recovery of interfacial bond strength after complete fiber/matrix debonding is achieved with a microencapsulated solvent-based healing chemistry. The surface of a glass fiber is functionalized with microcapsules containing varying concentrations of reactive epoxy resin and ethyl phenylacetate (EPA) solvent. Microbond specimens consisting of a single fiber and a microdroplet of epoxy are te...

Novel, multi-purpose, PMMA-type adhesive resin with newly synthesized microcapsule of radical polymerization initiators.

The behavior of microencapsulated polymerization initiators in dental adhesives is unknown. This study investigated the effects of new microencapsulated initiators in novel, multi-purpose, PMMA-type adhesive resin on the bonding performance and polymerization reactivity. Microencapsulated BPO and 1,3,5-trimethylbarbituric acid (TMBA) with PEMA as a shell polymer were quantitatively synthesized ...

Full Recovery of Fracture Toughness Using a Nontoxic Solvent-Based Self-Healing System

Two significant advances are reported for solvent-based self-healing of epoxy materials. First, an autonomic system yielding complete recovery of fracture toughness after crack propagation was achieved by embeddingmicrocapsules containing amixture of epoxy monomer and solvent into an epoxy matrix. Healing with epoxy-solvent microcapsules is superior to capsules that contain solvent alone, and m...

Autonomic healing of low-velocity impact damage in fiber-reinforced composites

In this study autonomic self-healing of impact damage in composite materials is shown using a microencapsulated healing agent. The components for self-healing, urea–formaldehyde microcapsules containing dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) liquid healing agent and paraffin wax microspheres containing 10 wt% Grubbs’ catalyst, have been successfully incorporated in a woven S2-glass-reinforced epoxy composite...

Self-healing structural composite materials

A self-healing fiber-reinforced structural polymer matrix composite material is demonstrated. In the composite, a microencapsulated healing agent and a solid chemical catalyst are dispersed within the polymer matrix phase. Healing is triggered by crack propagation through the microcapsules, which then release the healing agent into the crack plane. Subsequent exposure of the healing agent to th...
